A wordmark or logotype is a font-based logo that focuses on a business’ name alone. It is important that a company’s wordmark is memorable enough to capture and hold an individual’s attention as for many brand’s, this one of the first visuals and interactions the audience shares with your brand. A wordmark typically relies entirely on typography which may be distorted or edited in some way to become as exciting and engaging as possible. Once I chose my brand’s name: Treaz, I was able to begin my visual brand development with my wordmark as this will allow me to begin considering how I can convey my brand values to the world.
After designing a wordmark for my commercial brand Treaz, I began to research logo marks and experiment with creating my own for the mobile banking app. According to The Branding Journal, a logomark is an easily recognisable graphic symbol that identifies a company, a commercial product, or organisation. It is one of the ways to distinguish a brand in a competitive world, full of graphic elements that try to attract our attention every day. A logo is generally a combination of typographies, graphics/symbols, and colors. It is a graphic element that is part of the visual identity of a brand. As I begin to apply my brand to mockups, app design and a landing page, it is important that my brand has a logo which I will use frequently as a memorable symbol where my wordmark is not suitable.
Following my research of successful logos, I began to sketch out different ideas which would be successfully represent my commercial’s brands vision and purpose. At first, I brainstormed literal interpretations of the brand’s name: “Treaz”, playing on the natural imagery evoked including leaves, trees and similar shapes as seen in the below sketches. I experimented with tree forms that could be merged with the brand’s initial, “T” both upper and lowercase. This led me to create a series of tree sapling options. I liked the idea of the young tree being a symbol of the beginning of a student’s financial journey, with Treaz helping their savings grow as a sapling has the potential to grow into a tree. However, I wanted my logomark to be visually simple and modern to emphasise the sense of clarity and ease the bank provides. My sketches inspired by natural forms began to feel very limiting and detailed.
